A New Brain - Album Review
On 2-6-99 john.l.gibbons@ccmail.census.gov sends:
"It's not that I am uninterested in the fan club or the chat
rooms, I just
don't have Internet access (nor do I have a PC at home--I have to receive my
e-mail at my office). But I am a die-hard Malcolm Gets fan. I've been a fan
since the inception of CITC. I've always felt that the character of Richard
Karinsky is the best part of the show, even though I love all of the other
characters, including Charlie (and I was very sorry to see him leave the
series).
My interest in Gets goes beyond the confines of the show. I also
enjoy his singing and pianism. In fact, I stumbled across a short-lived talk
show (was it Pat Bullard, or something like that?) that was on a couple of
years ago around Christmas time. Malcolm was the featured guest. During the
program, he also played the piano and sang a song (which I believe he composed
himself). As soon as I learned that a CD was being produced of A New Brain, I
rushed out and bought a copy. It is wonderful and so is Malcolm!
In fact, A
New Brain was a double attraction for me because I also loved
William Finn's
musical Falsettos. In fact, A New Brain has a hold-over performer from
Falsettos, Chip Zien, who plays Mr. Bungee, the frog character on a children's
show (in Falsettos, he played Mendel the Psychiatrist). If you are not
familiar with A New Brain, you really should give it a whirl. It is quite
tuneful and a couple of the ballads can bring tears to the eyes (something
that I have always found especially moving in the musicals of William Finn).
Thanks!
Lloyd Gibbons
A rabid fan
P.S.: I have to vote against the new sideburns he currently sports as
Richard. They're a bit too extreme (and rather Elvis-ish, if you get my
meaning). I feel Richard is more conservative than that."

The Future of Caroline in the City
I had heard on TV. (think it was ET) that NBC was considering dropping
CitC
next season. Which is very important to those of us watching Malcolm. I
know that with every sitcom couple getting together there is rumors of show
cancellations. If anyone has any information about this very scary topic
please email me so that we can pass on the info. Thanks!!

How many fans are there out there?
On 2-6-99 ecng0925@hotmail.com (Erik Gets)
sends:
"Are there really a lot of CITC/Malcolm fans out there? Are there more
or less than there used to be?
I'd appreciate hearing from you."
As of 2-18-99 our fan club has 181 members...and it grows every week.
We do
not have hundreds of people joining daily but we have a steady flow of new
members and very few people who ask to be removed.
The only thing that we have noticed is a lack of interest in the
club...not
that the show is getting less attention (although I personally think it is)
but we are trying to bring it back!!! We all still love the show so it will
just take some time to get people involved again!
By the way Eric...great last name...you aren't by any chance related
to....Nah!!!

The question why reruns for the sweeps? (an editorial)
I was very upset to hear that there would be no new episode throughout
the
month of February. So I asked myself why? Here is what I have come up with:
1. The writers needed more time to figure out where this show is going.
The way that the show has been promoted lately lacks....because the plot lines
have also lacked. NBC has some of the best writers in the world so why should
CitC lack those talents. I know it is not merely NBC that does this show, but
really February sweeps are the time to get the show to thrive or flounder and
so how does killing new episodes during this time help CitC?
2. The next thing I thought of was the time slot. This isn't the best one in
the world however, it could be worse. They have utilized the slot to promote
their little specials, but how can this help CitC you ask? Well, say someone
gets used to these "Specials" and so flips over to NBC during the same time
after February sweeps are over....perhaps they will stay to watch Suddenly
Susan....and then since it wasn't bad stays to watch CitC. This will add some
to the audience of CitC and hopefully add to how CitC is promoted!!
3. Maybe they wanted us to miss our Malcolm for a while???
Hey I have a humble opinion so all comments to this will be held in the utmost
respect...ream me if you feel the need!!

Heres some bad news about the shows coming up
IT REALLY SUCKS!
Opening:
Caroline interview a potential tenant for her house (she bought her
parents old house in Peshtigo). She decides not to accept him because
he's kinda loony
Act 1:At the loft, Annie is sick, on the couch at Caroline's. Richard comes
in and bugs her. Caroline comes down and tells Richard she is going to
Peshtigo to find a tenant for her house. Richard agrees to take care of
Annie & Salty while Caroline is gone. Del comes in complaining that his
girlfriend is on a date so Richard has to take care of him too.
In Peshtigo, Caroline goes to her old house to try and convince her
grandma to move to her new townhouse so Caroline can rent the house.
Randy (guy that Caroline kissed in the previous episode...guy she grew
up next door to) comes in and lets on that he is the new tenant. The
mention the kiss they had previously and joke around. They hear a
really loud noise and go check it out in the kitchen. They find Grandma
Duffy at the washing machine punching buttons. Caroline turns it off,
opens the lid and removes some broken dishes. Grandmas grabs her stuff
and heads upstairs.Later that evening in the loft, Richard is still dealing
with Annie &
Del. Richard realizes he accidentally gave Annie Salty's medication and
calls the doctor. He is told there could be some side effects and there
are! Del is annoying Richard because Del is worried about his
girlfriend on a date with a guy names "Snake".
Later that evening in the Peshtigo kitchen, Randy fixed the washing
machine. Caroline & Randy talk about Grandma Duffy. They also talk
about old times and seem to enjoy it. They notice soap bubbling out of
the washer. Randy accidentally put the wrong soap in because Grandma
Duffy does not label her containers. Grandma comes in and accuses them
of trying to flood her out of the house.
Meanwhile, at Caroline's loft, Richard is getting even more annoyed with
having to take care of Annie & Dell.
Back at the Peshtigo kitchen, Randy is sweeping & Caroline is getting
the wet/dry vac...the kitchen is knee-deep in suds. The phone rings and
Caroline answers, but didn't hear who was on the other line because she
dropped the phone into the suds. Caroline & Randy are looking through
the foam to find the phone, and are also flicking suds at each other.
The phone call was from Richard. Richard is in the loft, holding the
phone. He hears laughter over the line.
Act 2:
The next morning at the Peshtigo living room, Grandma Duffy & Caroline
are talking. Grandma doesn't want to leave and tells Caroline to tell
him to move in with Grandma. Caroline calls Richard. Richard inquires
about the party that was going on the night before when he heard
Caroline & Randy giggling over the phone.
At the banquet room at the Marriott Hotel, Richard is there to pick up a
check for Caroline. The people with the check bring him to the
"Sunshine" room. Richard gets to accept the check on behalf of an
organization and wings the whole thing. He had to give a speech.
A little later, in the Peshtigo living room, Caroline is still trying to
get Grandma Duffy to move to the townhome. Grandma agrees to move if
she can have a trellis (you'll find out why <GRIN> when you see the
show).
A little later, Richard is still accepting the check and giving his
speech.
A little later at the Peshtigo Living Room, Caroline & Randy talk a
little bit. After Randy exits, Grandma makes a comment to Caroline
about how she "lights up" when Randy is around.
That night at the loft, Richard arrives at Caroline's with some
groceries. He is still having a difficult time dealing with caring for
Annie & heartbroken Del. Caroline comes home and Richard kisses her.
Then he starts to leave, telling Caroline that after the past 2 days, he
needs to be alone for many hours of silence. He starts telling her
about the awful things that have happened to him. The phone starts to
right. As she answers it, Richard leaves. Afterward, Caroline is
talking to the caller, Randy, and they are giggling.
AND IF THAT WASN"T ENOUGH I FOUND OUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN APRIL.
Caroline tells Richard she kisses Randy (while she was home) , and she
couldn't figure out why she was attracted to another man when she should be
thinking about Richard. It ended with them wondering where they were going to
go from there.

In upcoming issues:
- we will have poll results....for those of you who missed it we are asking
all of you to stop in at the web page and place your age in the voters booth.
There is this strange misconception that all of the Malcolm fans are under the
age of adults...and as all of you know there are many of us that have been in
adulthood for several years now.
- a questions section.....for people to post questions that they have about
Malcolm. This will also be where people can post ads for taped shows that
they have missed or information classifieds...like who has the best price for
Malcolm's CD's.
- and new information that comes in from everyone....(hint, hint, that means
you!)
- as well as responses to topics we have posted in this issue!!
- Plus....updates on the T-shirt idea and other spoilers (if we can get ahold
of any!!!)
Keep any information coming to either
Miranda988@aol.com or
Meg6212@aol.com!!
Thanks everyone and see you in cyberspace soon!!!
